They say that spring is a time when a young man’s fancy turns to love, but we’re calling BS on that. Decades of experience has taught us that spring is a time when men and women alike can think of one thing only: March Madness.

Established in 1939, the NCAA’s 68-team basketball tournament has become a national obsession. Individual games routinely attract more than 15 million viewers, and more than 170 million brackets are filled out annually despite the fact the odds of correctly predicting all 67 games is 1 in 9.2 quintillion. Just how much is a quintillion? If you were to count it out, one number per second, it would take 292 billion years to reach the end.

No one has come close to picking a perfect bracket yet, but that certainly hasn’t stopped basketball fans from trying. According to some estimates, U.S. businesses lose $13.3 billion in productivity as their employees track the movement of every bouncing ball during the final two weeks of March and the first Monday of April.

Even if their picks don’t pan out, they can still enjoy intense, nail-biting games, head-shaking upsets, and epic buzzer-beaters. The tournament’s compelling sudden-death format truly has something for everyone, regardless of viewers’ knowledge of the game and its constantly-changing participants.
