Green Bay Packers Team History

Earl “Curly” Lambeau founded the Green Bay Packers with $500 from his employer, the Indian Packing Company, and a promise to name the team after his employer and sponsor. Thus, the Green Bay Packers were born and have played in Green Bay, their original city, since the team’s conception in 1919. The team was awarded a place in the National Pro Football League but within a year of the team’s origin they became unable to sustain themselves financially. After being pushed out of the league, Lambeau gathered a group of financial investors who kept the Green Bay Packers alive and earned their nickname of “Hungry Five”. This is the origin of the only publicly traded professional football franchise in the NFL, and the creation of the Green Bay Football Corporation.

The franchise's most important and impactful moment in the National Football League is the winning of the first Super Bowl. Vince Lombardi, who was at the time an assistant for the New York Football Giants, was offered a position with the Green Bay Packers as their head coach in 1959. Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers to the first two Super Bowl victories in history, and five championships in the 1960s. To this day he is highly regarded as one of the most important figures in all of the sport, and the Super Bowl trophy has since become his namesake.

In 1992 the Packers acquired one of many Hall of Fame players to wear the green and yellow when they traded a first round draft selection for the young gun-slinger out of Southern Mississippi, Brett Favre. Brett stepped in to replace an injured quarterback and won his first NFL game in Green Bay. From that point on Favre went on to break the league record for consecutive starts by an NFL quarterback with 297 consecutive games. Brett Favre won Green Bay a Super Bowl trophy in 1996 and had one of the most memorable careers of any Packer, establishing quarterback passing records across the books.

In 2008 the Packers selected California quarterback Aaron Rodgers and ushered in a new era of Packers football. Rodgers won a Super Bowl in 2010 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and continues to shatter records in the NFL. Easily considered one of the best quarterbacks to play the game, the Packers rely on Rodgers yet again in 2018 as they face potentially the toughest NFC North division in the past decade.
