The feature race on Wednesday at the Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex is the $75,000 Governor’s Cup Handicap, which drew a competitive field of ten. Morning line favorite for the six and one-half furlong race around two turns is Drill.

Drill should appreciate the drop in class after running in eight straight graded stake races. In fact, the $75,000 purse is the lowest he has run for since his second career start back in August 2011. After that it has been 14 graded stakes and two stakes with purses of $82,000 and $98,000. Drill is the horse to beat, but not a slam dunk.

Kate’s Event is the second choice at 7-2 on the morning line favorite and will be doing his best running late. The six-year-old horse has won four of seven on fast dirt with one second and one third. Martin Pedroza is in the irons, so you know the jockey will give the horse a well-timed ride over the bull ring track.

Basmati may be the speed of the field and is the one to catch off of two straight five-furlong sprints on the turf at Del Mar. By Borrego, Basmati has three wins in his career, two of them over conventional dirt. Jockey Edwin Maldonado has continued his good Del Mar success right over into this meet, winning 12 of his 50 mounts.

Cacau could give Basmati some company on the front end and is making his first start on a surface other than turf. His bullet drill on September 11 at Santa Anita suggests the surface switch will not be a problem. Carbonite is another speed horse, who won this race two years ago when he was 70-cents on the dollar. Trained by John Sadler, Carbonite would not be a shock to outrun his 9-2 morning line odds.

Horse for course, always a good angle, is Luckarack, winner of three of his four career starts in Pomona. Now in the barn of Michael Pender, Luckarack will be doing his best running late and while he may not get there, he is a definite use in trifecta and superfecta plays.

First post on Wednesday at Barretts is 7:00 pm ET with the Governor’s Cup off at 10:20.
