A Brief History of the Belmont Derby

While the name might be new to some race fans, the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (or simply Belmont Derby) has deep roots in horse racing history. In 1929, the race was established at the now-defunct Jamaica Racetrack as the Jamaica Handicap, named for the neighborhood in Queens, New York that the track called home. The race was run there for 30 years until the closing of the Jamaica Racetrack in 1959. The 1960 running was held at the Aqueduct Racetrack, and subsequently put on hiatus until 1975. Between 1975 and 1987, the race bounced between Aqueduct and Belmont until officials decided that its permanent home would be at Belmont. In 2014 the race was renamed the Belmont Derby, along with changes to its distance (1 1/8th miles to 1 ¼ miles) and purse (winners to get $1,250,000 instead of $500,000).

Notable entries in the Belmont Derby include Piet (3-time race winner) and millionaire Thoroughbreds Ruhlmann (1988 winner), Subordination (1997 winner), and Artie Shiller (2004 winner).
