Charles Town track update
The biggest day of the Charles Town meet is coming up Friday night, Aug. 27!
With a stakes-laden card, including the Charles Town Classic (G2) and Charles Town Oaks (G3), it is time to check in on the latest trends at the track, along with the connections and angles worth watching.
Arnaldo Bocachica is romping in the jockey standings.
He has 150 wins (491 starts, 31%), almost twice as many as closest competitor, Denis Araujo, who has 76 (375 starts, 20%).
From a price perspective, Araujo is the jockey to watch. He has a +7% flat-bet ROI across all his starts at Charles Town this year. In route races, he has nine wins from 32 starts (28%) with a +41% ROI.
The top of the trainers' standings this year at Charles Town looks just like the last few years, with perennial leader Jeff Runco (71 wins, 316 starts, 22%) atop the table. He is seven clear of Anthony Farrior (64 wins, 211 starts, 30%) and nine past Ronney Brown (62 wins, 324 starts, 19%).
Both Runco and Farrior have been loaded with first-time starters this year, so make sure to watch debuts from both barns. Runco has six wins from 12 starters (+3% ROI) with debut runners and 10 of 12 have finished in the money. Farrior is also at 50% with first-time starters, with four wins from eight starts and a +94% ROI.
Just as they are with jockeys, route races are a good place to look for price angles with trainers.
Watch for trainer James Dean Locklear when he sends a horse a mile or more at Charles Town. Though Locklear has just seven wins from 46 starts (15%) on the meet, he has five wins from 14 starts (36%) in races at a mile or longer, with a +177% ROI. Only two of those route wins came with favorites and two came with horses at double-digit odds.
