Chasing Super High 5 carryovers at Tampa and Turfway
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson analyzes the non-jackpot Super High 5 carryovers available to play on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs and Turfway Park.
Tampa Bay Downs, Race 1: $25,915 Super High 5 carryover (12:18 p.m. ET)
There are no certainties in horse racing, but the morning line odds suggest #8 Iko Iko (4-5) will be mighty tough to beat in Saturday’s first race at Tampa Bay Downs, a one-mile maiden special weight for fillies and mares racing one mile on turf.
That’s good news for bettors, because there’s a $25,915 Super High 5 carryover up for grabs in Tampa’s Saturday opener, and keying Iko Iko on top is the perfect place to start in constructing a winning ticket.
Iko Iko has shown promise in two starts against maiden special weight company for hot trainer Thomas Proctor, a 21% winner since the beginning of 2022. Iko Iko debuted racing about one mile over the Gulfstream turf course in April 2022 and ran well to finish fourth, beaten 2 1/4 lengths with an 80 Brisnet Speed rating. Then she tackled a one-mile and 70-yard contest over the Gulfstream Tapeta track and finished second by a head against future American Oaks (G1) runner-up School Dance, earning a 92 Brisnet Speed rating.

Iko Iko hasn’t run since May 2022, but Proctor wins at a solid 19% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, and Iko Iko brings a sharp work tab to the table highlighted by a couple of quick five-furlong moves over the Palm Meadows turf course. None of her Saturday rivals have earned a Brisnet Speed rating higher than 80, so Iko Iko’s 4-5 morning line odds are warranted.
Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5:
- $1 Super High 5: 8 with 2 with 3,4 with 3,4,7 with 1,3,4,5,6,7 ($16)
- $1 Super High 5: 8 with 3,4 with 2 with 3,4,7 with 1,3,4,5,6,7 ($16)
Turfway Park, Race 9: $1,452 Super High 5 carryover (9:55 p.m. ET)
Turfway Park also has a Super High 5 carryover on the table for Saturday. The $1,452 prize pool is available to chase in Race 9, a $7,500 maiden claimer for three-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs on Tapeta.
With 11 horses in the entries, it’s a tough race to decipher. One of the key contenders is #6 One Stormy Lady (3-1), who rallied strongly to finish second by 1 1/2 lengths in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint over this track and class level on Feb. 18.
But #7 Ontothenext (5-1) finished less than a length behind One Stormy Lady in third place, and in turn, Ontothenext came home less than a length clear of fourth-place finisher #10 All Roses (5-1). The latter filly was running for the first time and is eligible to move forward in her second start. Use all three of these runners in the Super High 5, along with a strong dose of the class-dropping #9 Ms. the Law (9-2), and there’s a good chance you’ll cash a winning ticket.
