Del Mar track update for Aug. 17
The Pacific Classic (G1) is coming up Saturday, Aug. 21 at Del Mar. Ahead of the meet's flagship day, let's check in on some leaders and angles!
Flavien Prat leads the jockey standings with 26 wins (91 starts, 29%), five clear of Abel Cedillo (21 wins, 121 starts, 17%) and Juan Hernandez (21 wins, 115 starts, 18%). Prat's win rate also leads all riders with more than three starts, and he has been a force to be reckoned with at the seaside racetrack, even though he has spent time on other circuits this summer.
Prat has lived up to his reputation as a quality turf rider, as he co-leads the turf standings at Del Mar with 12 wins (48 starts, 25%), tied with Hernandez (12 wins, 63 starts, 19%). Despite his higher number of starts, Hernandez has a slight positive ROI (+2%), in contrast with Prat's -18% return across all grass starts. Umberto Rispoli (11 wins, 57 starts, 19%) is just behind, and sports a +6% ROI on the lawn.
Perhaps surprisingly, Prat has come home at prices on dirt. He ranks second behind Cedillo in dirt wins — Cedillo has 17 (17-for-69, 25%) to Prat's 14 (14-for-43, 33%) — but Prat offers a +10% ROI across all his dirt races, compared to Cedillo's -5% ROI.
Make sure to consider price horses ridden by Geovanni Franco on any surface. He has six wins from 49 starts (12%), but two of those winners were true bombers — 78-1 shot Miss Carousel in a turf sprint and 46-1 shot Northern Gem in a dirt mile.
Peter Miller leads the Del Mar training table, with 14 wins (80 starts, 18%). That puts him four clear of Mark Glatt (10 wins, 43 starts, 23%), the only other trainer in double digits.
When looking for price horses, Miller is cashing in on the dirt. Even though he is tied with Bob Baffert for the most dirt wins, Miller's nine victories in 32 starts (28%) add up to a +48% ROI.
On grass, Simon Callaghan has lit up the tote. He has three wins from 11 starts (27%) on the meet, with a +213% ROI in turf races.
