Dick Powell’s Australia Pick of the Week June 5
Race 5 at Wyong (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a class 1 handicap going 1 5/16 miles. The track is expected to be “Good-4” so the ground should be pretty neutral. PRINCE CAMELOT (#6) (7-1) overcame a rough start here to prevail by a neck going this distance to break his maiden in his fourth career start. Taking on winners for the first time in this spot, he was checked hard two back before rallying for third here at the same distance for J. G. Sargent, who is winning at a 12-percent clip. Prince Camelot should get better with age and distance as he is a son of the long-winded Camelot out of Poste Restante, who was Group 3-placed twice at four. Camelot, who almost won the British Triple Crown and could run all day, has already produced an Irish Derby (G1) winner in his first two crops to race. ELCANO (#12) (25-1) ran well in the middle of this season going a lot shorter. He had a good second in mid-December when coming from way back, then ran third on January 10 before going to the sidelines for four months. After two barrier trials, he was an even fourth going a mile in good time and showed better speed before weakening to fourth again most recently. The son of High Chaparral has every right to improve going this distance as High Chaparral has been a sensational sire here on firm ground going long. Gai Waterhouse wins 20 percent the past 50 starts and Tim Clark picks up the mount. KILLER INSTINCT (#8) (6-1) rallied from far back to get third two starts back going a mile before breaking her maiden convincingly going 1 1/8 miles as the favorite on May 23. She takes on winners for American owner LNJ Foxwoods, and, other than her career debut, she has run well each time out. The daughter of Animal Kingdom is the first foal to race out of Sammy’s Girl and should be able to handle the longer distance while in with only 122 pounds. Prince Camelot is crying out for longer distances and gets it in this spot. Don’t forget Twin Spires’ Australian Racing Bet Back offer where you may receive $5 win bet back on Australian A tracks Monday through Thursday if you opt in and play at least four races on a single day using the new TwinSpires platform.
