Hanson: Spot plays for Indiana Derby Day July 7
One of the several offers available to TwinSpires bettors for Wednesday's Indiana Derby card at Indiana Grand is the popular Bet Back promotion. Players that opt in can receive up to $10 back on any win wager throughout the entire card if their selection finishes second or third.
Here are some horses of interest during the stakes portion of the Indiana Grand card.
Race 7 -- Michael G. Schaefer Memorial (5:30 p.m. ET)
#1 Shared Sense is the horse to beat from a class perspective, but is potentially vulnerable at a short price as he makes his return from a layoff dating back to late November. #5 PIRATE'S PUNCH (7-2) didn't show quite as much early foot as he's capable of in his own return from a similar spell in last month's Salvator Mile (G3), but could prove sharper for the effort. The Grade 3 winner and likely second choice also won his only prior start at Indiana Grand.
Race 8 -- Jonathan B. Shuster Memorial (6:03 p.m. ET)
#3 SPLIT THE WICKETS (6-1) has been more of a fringe player in prior stakes appearances and will need a strong pace here, but comes off a strong showing in a Churchill Downs allowance and picks up Florent Geroux for this 1 1/16-mile grass test. He's one of a few in the field with winning experience over this course.
Race 10 -- Indiana General Assembly Distaff (7:05 p.m. ET)
The multiple Grade 3-placed #10 SISTER HANAN (12-1) doesn't look out of place in this grass test for fillies and mares, and could come on from a recent third-place finish behind a couple returning rivals in a Churchill allowance. Undefeated at 1 1/16 miles, the addition of Luis Saez is also a plus.
Race 11 - Indiana Oaks (G3) (7:43 p.m. ET)
#9 LADY ACES (8-1) concedes experience to several others in the field, but could prove dangerous if her speed can be used to put some separation between herself and others in the early stages. Moderating the tempo in the Summertime Oaks (G2) last out didn't work, as she was outfinished by multiple graded winner Crazy Beautiful and #2 Soothsay. She has the pedigree to get better, too, being by Constitution and out of a half-sister to the talented, often enigmatic, Paradise Woods.
