Hanson's Spot Plays for Day 5 of Royal Ascot 2020

The most action-packed Day 5 in Royal Ascot history is on Saturday as the re-shuffled schedule includes both of the meet's top miles for 3-year-olds in addition to the traditional feature of the 6-furlong Diamond Jubilee (G1).

Owner Sheikh Hamdan and jockey Jim Crowley have been fairly dominant among the human connections this week, but trainer John Gosden has also had a terrific stand with the likes of Stradivarius, Lord North, Frankly Darling, and Fanny Logan scoring with ease. We'll lean on a pair of his sophomores here.

Race 4 -- Coronation (G1) -- 9:25 a.m. ET

Although she finished up her juvenile campaign with a strong third-place run in the Montrose Fillies S. at Newmarket against the well-regarded Born With pride and eventual Irish 1000 Guineas (G1) heroine Peaceful, #5 RUN WILD's (4-1) overall record hardly suggested she'd be up to a Guineas or Coronation standard herself. That has been re-evaluated in the wake of a romping victory in the 1 1/4-mile Pretty Polly S. at Newmarket on June 7, where she led by a large margin most of the way with a 3 3/4-length margin at the end. Granted, that was only a Listed affair, but the kind of performance that suggested she deserved a crack at a bigger prize. Gosden has seemingly made few mistakes in choice of targets for his top runners in recent years and like how this filly is already proven going longer in case the conditions turn this into a stiff mile to be endured rather than relished.

Race 5 -- St James's Palace (G1) -- 10 a.m. ET

Like Kellie Reilly, we're quite enthused about #2 PALACE PIER (5-1) in his attempt to replicate the feat of his sire, Kingman, by winning this test. Three convincing victories -- two at Sandown over turf last year and a get-fit June 6 run over the Newcastle all-weather -- has given him a proper foundation to take this overdue step up in class. A race where bettors typically gravitate toward Guineas form, we're hoping for a respectable single-digit price with #3 Pinatubo and #7 Wichita taking a larger bulk of the action.
