Harness racing: Picks and plays for April 7 at Hoosier Park
Each week, Frank Cotolo employs money-management tactics to build wagers that focus on plump profits. For the April 7 program at Hoosier Park, he suggests some horses can fit in any type of wager.
Returning to the track and class level that worked best for him last year, #7 Star Of Oz prepped in a qualifier at Hoosier and is ready to pick up where he left off.
Miami Valley shipper #3 Why Don’t U Stay has been able to pick up some purse money against fields like this and will offer a good price to supplement the exotic wagers offered in this race.
Last week, #8 Keith Bourbon broke at the gate and had no chance, although he went off a well-supported 7-2. He is a well-bred trotter that has only raced thrice, both times in Indiana, and has much promise, certainly by comparison to this field.
Amigo Hall, the damsire of #5 Major Hooligan, was a winner at 27-1 in the 2003 Hambletonian. It is a fine bloodline, including sire Balanced Image, in the Volomite line. Major Hooligan may have a bright future and it could start with this race.
Still looking for a 2021 win, after five starts, #7 Golden Genes has a good shot here, where he is bound to be underrated. At Miami Valley early this year, he has been competitive and should be respected in this race.
A three-year-old by champion sire Muscle Hill, #4 Protein Shake may be the most dangerous of them all. He won his first race here in March and looks to have the speed of his royal family.
Complete your trifectas with the obvious morning-line favorites, #1 Joe Joe Joe and #2 Swan Fashion.
In only three starts, #6 Miss Evita Hall has won one at Miami Valley. Her first at Hoosier she broke at the beginning and was eliminated. Toss that one out and go with the well-bred, late-starting eight-year-old mare, who is not a proven loser.
Sophomore #2 Dewtiful’s Grace, has already shown talent at two and blue away her qualifier foes at Hoosier in March.
Last week, #2 Queen Margherita, the race favorite, rushed on the outside to get the lead at the top of the stretch and lost some ground. She may take control early here, and could go gate to wire.
A number of trouble trips and tough posts set back #7 Doc Mossies Legacy at Miami Valley and Dayton, but with races like he won here Nov. 20 and the week before, he could beat these at a great price.
