A pair of graded stakes races on the green will be part of a big day of racing at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Race 6 - Matron S. (G3)

A dozen juvenile fillies will run six furlongs on the inner turf in a competitive affair. I will use both of the two-top finishers from a maiden dash on the green at Saratoga on August 13. The Joe Sharp-trained #4 Lady Danae won that race in going-away fashion prior to recording a fifth-place result in the stakes ranks at Kentucky Downs as the 11-10 favorite. A $210,000 purchase, the daughter of young sire Klimt is training well as of late and will relish the return to the Empire State.

#7 Bubble Rock was second on debut and came back to romp at Saratoga on September 3. The dark bay daughter of More Than Ready justified her 3-5 price at second calling with ease, and the future appears to be bright for the April foal.

Wagers

  • $10 exacta box 4-7 ($20)
  • 50-cent trifecta 4, 7 with 4, 7 with all ($10)
  • 50-cent trifecta 4, 7 with all with 4, 7 ($10)

Race 7 - Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. (G1)

A standout field of seven will travel 1 1/2 miles on the Belmont outer lawn in a $500,000 contest. Aidan O’Brien’s classy #7 Japan got back to his best when a close second in the recent Sword Dancer S. (G1) at Saratoga last time out, and I will tab the import for victory on Saturday. The accomplished Group 1 winner didn’t have a great four-year-old season, but he is back in top form, and the son of Galileo is cut out to love the Belmont lawn. I expect him to track from second or third early and get the jump on the deep closing types under Wayne Lordan.

Christophe Clement’s #3 Gufo is a Grade 1 winner on the course and also exploded late to take the Sword Dancer (G1) last time out. The son of Declaration of War is two-for-two since adding blinkers and looms large with his best beneath Joel Rosario. Defending champ #6 Channel Maker and the ageless #2 Arklow will also make the ticket.

Wagers

  • $25 win #7 Japan ($25)
  • $1 superfecta 3, 7 with 3, 7 with 2, 6 with all ($16)
