A well-matched field of nine will travel one mile on the Oaklawn Park strip in Friday’s $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes. The Road to the Kentucky Derby event is the first of four races for three-year-olds at the Hot Springs, Arkansas, venue this season. It appears like a very good betting event. FREE PPs for the Smarty Jones Stakes! Here is a look at the field: Long Range Toddy (#1) (4-1)Springboard Mile and Clever Trevor Stakes victor has won three in succession and draws the rail in this one. The Take Charge Indy colt has shown versatility and class while steadily improving in each lifetime appearance. The Steve Asmussen pupil will be forwardly placed with Richard Eramia in the controls. Sleepy Eyes Todd (#2) (30-1) – This longshot was a sprint winner on debut in the fall but picks a difficult spot for his sophomore debut. The Miguel Silva trainee is hard to back with confidence in a talented field. Super Steed (#3) (9-2) – The Larry Jones charge failed as the even-money choice in the Sugar Bowl Stakes, though the quality of that field is hard to ignore. The Super Saver colt looked the part with a smashing allowance win two back at Churchill Downs and he could be any kind in his route debut. Terry Thompson has the assignment. Six Shooter (#4) (6-1) – The Big Drama Stakes victor flopped the last time he ran with some in this cast. The Paul Holthus trainee is a capable sort, though, and improvement puts the gelding in the mix here. Boldor (#5) (8-1) – This prospect was a game debut winner before finishing a solid second in a recent allowance tilt at Churchill Downs. One of three in the field for trainer Steve Asmussen, the $700,000 son of Munnings is training swiftly and should enjoy stretching out for the initial time. Forloveofcountry (#6) (12-1) – The Sky Mesa colt enters off his top showing to date when an allowance winner at Churchill Downs, earning a hefty 108 BRIS Late Pace figure in the process. The talented Virginia-bred lacks dirt experience, but he makes sense with a move forward off of his latest. Bankit (#7) (7-2) – This stakes winner is the one to beat and a likely must use. The New York-bred is versatile and just missed in the Springboard Mile when rallying from well back. The son of Central Banker will be closer from the start in this one. Gray Attempt (#8) (5-2) – The Sugar Bowl Stakes victor has led at every call in two straight for trainer William “Jinks” Fires. This potential pacesetter is moving forwardly and shows a bullet work on the Oaklawn surface. Shaun Bridgmohan will be in the silks. Jack Van Berg (#9) (20-1) – The stakes-placed colt was clear before flopping in an allowance dash at Churchill Downs last out. The bay is plenty fast and will hope to carry his speed around two turns. Regular pilot Jon Court retains the mount. ANALYSIS I find the Smarty Jones to be a wide-open race with five serious contenders. The vertical exotics could be very healthy in the nine-horse field, and my focus will be on the trifecta and superfecta. I will be keying the intriguing Boldor in the first and second slots for value at a square price. SUGGESTED WAGERS $1 Trifecta 5 with 3,7 with all = $14 $1 Trifecta 5 with all with 3,7 = $14 $1 Trifecta 3,7 with 5 with all = $14 $1 Superfecta Key 5 with 1,3,7,8 = $24 $1 Superfecta 1,3,7,8 with 5 with 1,3,7,8 with 1,3,7,8 = $24 Good Luck!
