Picks and Plays
Mahoning Valley: Race 1: Maiden Special Weight (one mile, 12:45 p.m. ET)
#7 Kerri’s Miracle (4-5) has finished second in her last three starts over this track and class level, including a one-mile heat on Dec. 21. The four-year-old filly has early speed and figures to work out a favorable trip on Tuesday, considering pacesetters went 4-for-7 (57%) racing one mile at Mahoning from Jan. 13-19.
#1 I’m Jac’d (7-2), who hasn’t missed the board in six straight races, can complete the exacta. #2 Miss Ellie (5-1), a top-four finisher in five consecutive starts, is a logical choice for a trifecta ticket capitalizing on the Trifecta Tuesday promotion.
- #7 Kerri’s Miracle (4-5)
- #1 I’m Jac’d (7-2)
- #2 Miss Ellie (5-1)
- $20 Exacta: 7 with 1
- $10 Trifecta: 7 with 1 with 2
Mahoning Valley: Race 3: Maiden Special Weight (5 1/2 furlongs, 1:41 p.m. ET)
#6 Danzing Chick (4-1) showed promise in her debut dashing six furlongs over this track and class level on Jan. 9, tracking the early pace before staying on to finish third.
Trainer Jason DaCosta wins at a lofty 27% rate with second-time starters, and jockey Angel Diaz has gone 3-for-12 (25%) teaming up with DaCosta over the last two months, so Danzing Chick has high-profile connections in her corner. We’ll count on Danzing Chick to turn the tables on Jan. 9 runner-up #5 Sister Code (6-1) and take home top honors.
#4 Divine Grace (5-2) can battle Sister Code for second place.
- #6 Danzing Chick (4-1)
- #4 Divine Grace (5-2)
- #5 Sister Code (6-1)
- $20 to win on #6 Danzing Chick
- $5 Exacta: 6 with 4,5 ($10)
- Total: $30
Turf Paradise: Race 9: $8,500 Claiming (one mile on turf, 6:16 p.m. ET)
Former Southern California competitor #4 Barnfield (4-1) is dropping in class after finishing seventh in a $20,000 allowance optional claimer at Turf Paradise, his first start since being claimed by hot trainer Robertino Diodoro.
Diodoro strikes at a 24% rate with horses running for the second time under his care, so Barnfield is eligible to fire a winning shot while descending to the $8,500 claiming level. He looks ready to spring a mild surprise against #7 Guest Check (3-1), runner-up in his last two starts over this course and class level.
- #4 Barnfield (4-1)
- #7 Guest Check (3-1)
- #8 Minnesota Red (8-1)
- $20 to win on #4 Barnfield
- $10 Exacta: 4 with 7
