Kentucky Derby Pedigree Profile: Long Range Toddy
Willis Horton's Long Range Toddy angled out at the top of the stretch and gamely held late to take the $400,000 Springboard Mile at Remington Park on Sunday evening. The two-year-old colt earned his second straight black-type tally while earning 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series. Long Range Toddy is by young sire Take Charge Indy, whose first foals are sophomores this year. His top domestic runner to date is 2018 Louisiana Derby (G2) victor Noble Indy. The grandson of Seattle Slew currently ranks second on the second-crop sire list. Long Range Toddy is the first stakes winner out of the Unbridled's Song mare Pleasant Song, who is herself out of multiple graded stakes heroine Pleasant Temper. Long Range Toddy hails from the same family as dual classic-placed A P Valentine. Unbridled's Song was a top sire prior to passing in 2013. His progeny have won at least 117 stakes races while amassing in excess of $130 million. Champions Arrogate, Will Take Charge, Forever Unbridled, Midshipman, and Embur's Song and are some of his most notable performers. As a broodmare sire, Unbridled's Song has proven to be sensational. His daughters have thrown more than 130 stakes winners to date and he rests in third on the 2018 North American broodmare sire list. 2009 Blue Grass (G1) winner General Quarters, 2015 Blue Grass star Carpe Diem, and 2017 Arkansas Derby (G1) victor Magnum Moon, are a trio of Kentucky Derby (G1) prep winners produced from daughters of Unbridled's Song. This campaign, Sapling victor Unionizer and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) runner-up Restless Rider join Long Range Toddy as soon-to-be three-year-olds out of Unbridled's Song mares. Long Range Toddy was bred in Kentucky by his owner and has a yearling full-brother named Night Before Last. He possesses a stout pedigree that is well-suited to thrive at the longer distances that he will be asked to run this winter and spring. If good enough, 1 1/4 miles will be within his scope.
