Kentucky Derby Roundup: April 6, 2020
Stay up to speed on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with a weekly roundup of all the latest news and developments:
Changes on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard
The COVID-19 outbreak has caused the suspension of racing at many tracks throughout North America. As a result, last week’s three scheduled Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races were all cancelled or postponed, leaving the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard unchanged. Tiz the Law (122 points) will lead the way into the spring lull.
News and Notes
Speaking of Tiz the Law, he closed at 5-1 in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4, the co-shortest price among the 23 individual betting interests. The undefeated and unchallenged allowance winner Charlatan also closed at 5-1, while Rebel (G2) winner Nadal and runaway Breeders’ Futurity (G1) victor Maxfield were both 9-1 when the dust settled.
As expected, the All Other 3-Year-Olds option closed as the overall favorite at 3-1.

Looking Ahead at the Kentucky Derby
There’s still hope of holding the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in the near future, but since a reopening date for Santa Anita has yet to be announced, the situation is still very much up in the air. There’s talk of transferring race dates from Santa Anita to Los Alamitos, which remains open for Quarter Horse racing, but a decision isn’t expected to come before Apr. 22.
At least potential Kentucky Derby contenders will have one stakes option to consider this week. Though it’s not an official Road to the Kentucky Derby prep race, Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile Oaklawn S. at Oaklawn Park carries a $200,000 purse and figures to serve as a local stepping stone toward the Arkansas Derby (G1) on May 2.
