The History of the Burradon Stakes

Staged for the first time in 2017, the Burradon Stakes on Newcastle’s Tapeta track created a strong enough impression that its second renewal in 2018 was made the climax of the inaugural European Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The one-mile feature carries the most points of any races in the series, with the first four horses home earning points on a 30-12-6-3 basis. This won’t be enough to ensure the winner of this race will earn the sole spot in the Kentucky Derby that is available in this series – the four 2-year-old races have points available on a 10-4-2-1 basis, while the two races in early March have a 20-8-4-2 split – but it will go a long way.

The inaugural Burradon Stakes resulted in a surprise victory for 25-1 chance Forest Ranger, from the Richard Fahey stable. He went on to earn graded stakes placings at Goodwood and York later in the year.

If a horse secures the European Road to the Kentucky Derby in the Burradon Stakes, they will face two major differences if they make it to Churchill Downs. Firstly, the Derby is on a dirt track, not an artificial one; and secondly, the Burradon Stakes is over a straight mile, very different to the two turns they will need to negotiate in the Derby.
