The History of the Indiana Derby

The Indiana Derby is a Grade III Thoroughbred horse race run at the Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, Indiana. Inaugurated in 1995, the race was previously run at Hoosier Park until 2012 when it was moved to its current home.

The 2010 race marked an incredible moment for not only the Indiana Derby but horse racing in the State when Lookin At Lucky became the first ever winner of a Triple Crown race to compete in Indiana. Lookin At Lucky went on to win the race by an impressive 1 1/4 lengths in a thrilling last-to-first effort.

Another notable winner of the race includes 2002 Champion Sprint Horse Orientate (2001), who captured a win at the Breeders' Cup Sprint that year.
