A Brief History of the Whitney Handicap

The Whitney Handicap is a 1 1/8 mile grade 1 handicap race for thoroughbred horses. Starting 2007, the winner of the handicap automatically qualified for the fall running in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The race is named after the Whitney family, a family of prominent supporters of the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. It is held annually in June/August at the Saratoga Race Course in New York and carries with it a legacy of horse racing greatness, such as the dramatic upset of 1973 that saw Triple Crown winner Secretariat finishing second to Allen Jerkens' colt Onion.
