The final card of the 2014 summer meet at Pleasanton is headlined by the $50,000 Everett Nevin Stakes for 2-year-olds. Run at 5 ½ furlongs, the race has attracted a field of eight, including several familiar faces around the Pleasanton track.

However, favoritism has gone to a Golden Gate invader who was purchased privately after an impressive maiden win. Global Magician broke his maiden by more than five lengths in May, and he’s since been transferred to the barn of Southern California horseman Peter Miller. He’s been working sharply at San Luis Rey since then, and all indications are that conventional dirt won’t be a problem.

Global Magician has attracted Northern California legend Russell Baze to ride, and he looks pretty tough to beat in this spot. I won’t go against him on top, even though the 2-1 morning line price isn’t exactly attractive.

My second choice is a bit of a price. Forte Feroce may not have beaten much in his debut win at Emerald Downs, but the final time was impressive and he showed he can rate a bit. He’s 10-1 on the morning line, and that seems like an overlay.

I’ll round out my trifecta with Discreet Flirt, a first-time starter from the Jeff Bonde barn. She takes on the boys here, and her workouts at Pleasanton have been sharp. It’s tricky to figure out how firsters will do in stakes company, but she seems well-meant, and if she runs to her workouts, the daughter of Discreet Cat could be a factor at first asking.

SELECTIONS: Global Magician, Forte Feroce, Discreet Flirt
