Monmouth’s turf track might not dry out by the time they run the feature on Sunday, The Tyro Stakes for two-year-olds going 5 furlongs over the turf. Race 9 has some possibilities with a few hard knocking types in a $20,000 optional claimer.

Monmouth Park 9 | 5:03 pm ET OC (20) for 3&up going 6f

2 – Nevsky – The morning line chalk looks awfully difficult to beat in this event as he’s going for his third victory in a row and figures to be right on the pace if not on the lead itself. Trainer Marcus Vitali is winning at 28% at the meet and jockey Orlando Bocachica has guided this guy to his last two victories, both over the Monmouth race track. Breaking from post-position 1 could be an advantage if Bocachica gets him out early.

1/1A – Union Label/Palm Island – The one that could challenge the top pick is Union Label who has a place and a show out of 3 races at Monmouth Park. The jockey switch on Union Label to Paco Lopez automatically puts that one into the mix early. Paco could very well pin Bocachica onto the rail, since he breaks from the outside of Nevsky, and force Orlando to go around him. Palm Island will have a shot if Union Label and Nevsky are too fast early.

4 – Pepe – Trainer John Servis is having a fantastic year and a great Monmouth meet. He brings Pepe off the shelf for this, a 25% winning move, and the Harlan’s Holiday sired four-year-old gelding has shown a few maintenance works since his last race, a second place finish in a $25,000 claimer. Jockey Samuel Camacho Jr. figures to make out a good trip right off of Union Label and Nevsky. If Servis has this guy cranked for the return, then he could surprise at what most likely will be overlaid odds.

Monmouth Park 10 | 5:34 pm ET Tyro for 2yo going 5 furlongs (T)

6 – Reid the News – Whether the race stays on the turf or goes to the dirt, Reid the News is the top pick. The gelded son of Mass Media was absolutely sensational when winning a 5 furlong $40,000 maiden claiming race at Delaware Park in his very first race. He won that event by 9 stunning lengths. Trainer Arturo Rodriguez doesn’t saddle them often, only 6 on the year. His lone winner is Reid the News. Since jockey Brian Pedroza decides to make the trip to Saratoga to ride Rodriguez’s horse, you have to figure that everybody involved likes this one’s chances.

1 – Souper Colossal – The maiden score was just okay, but the works since, especially 4 furlongs in :47 and the best of 86 on July 26, have been spectacular. Turf or dirt, you have to put this guy in the mix since Paco Lopez remains on board. Trainer Edward Plesa Jr. wins with 26% of his horses entered into a non-graded stakes race. He wins 22% with horses coming back to the track off of a layoff. Paco is likely to try and take the lead from the outset and then muscle this guy home in the stretch. Since Paco’s winning his races at 31%, it might be wise to use this guy in all exotic wagers.

8 – Secured Position – The maiden score was in a dawdling time, 5.5 furlongs in 1:06.2, but trainer Russell Cash runs Secured Position with Lasix for the first time in Sunday’s feature at Monmouth and the victory was over a track listed as good. He’s another that might not miss a beat if this goes to the dirt. But, Secured Position might be more than okay if it stays on the turf since Cash wins 17% with his horses trying turf for the first time. The ROI for that move is +3.65.

Dirt:  1-Souper Colossal, 6-Reid the News, 5-Governmentshutdown
