Santa Anita: How to bet the 2023 San Simeon Stakes
Eight runners will go about 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turf course in Sunday’s $100,000 San Simeon S. (G3) at Santa Anita. The talented and well-matched field boasts multiple solid contenders in the group and I will search for value with my top selections.
I came away impressed with #3 Count of Amazonia (8-1) when he dusted allowance foes with blinkers added last time out, and I will use the gelding in all of my wagers. Trained by Bob Hess, the bay six-year-old sat off of a wicked early pace and strode clear late., and he might enjoy a similar voyage here. The Irish-bred will be doing his best work inside the final furlong with John Velazquez taking the reins.

#4 Whatmakessammyrun (5-1) bagged the Eddie D. S. (G2) at the distance here in October and will be a major player with a similar effort in this spot. One of two in the field for Mark Glatt, the five-year-old gelding was unplaced in his 2022 finale but has trained well in the interim, led by a swift half-mile bullet move two works back. Kentucky-bred son of We Miss Artie is 3-for-4 here in his career and will be rallying from off of the early tempo with Joe Bravo in the stirrups.
The Phil D’Amato-trained #5 Motorious (5-2) has won or placed in each of his races since coming to the U.S. for a dynamic stakes barn. The five-year-old son of Muhaarar was second best in the Clocker’s Corner S. in his latest venture and seems poised to improve off of that performance on Sunday. Regular pilot Flavien Prat will be in the silks once again aboard the tactical contender.
#1 Brickyard Ride (2-1) is the one to catch and beat while making his seasonal bow for trainer Craig Lewis. The fleet son of Clubhouse Ride is 3-for-4 locally and was a fine stakes winner the last time that he ran off of an extended break. The California-bred chestnut will be sent from the start under the guidance of Juan Hernandez.
