Simplification: Kentucky Derby contender profile
A frontrunning type early in his career, Simplification displayed a new dimension after missing the break in the Holy Bull (G3), rallying for second, and the bay Florida-bred colt settled nicely from off the pace before charging to a convincing win in the Fountain of Youth (G2). Surprisingly, Simplification came out winging it in the Florida Derby (G1), dueling for the lead and eventually weakening to third as the favorite, and connections hope the setback will toughen up the sophomore for his main engagement. Simplification will look to show more by reverting back to a stalking style in the Kentucky Derby.
Simplification Speed Figures
Sire: Not This Time
Simplification is from the second crop of Not This Time, who established himself as a top contender for the 2017 Kentucky Derby when recording a neck second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) but unfortunately never raced again. By three-time leading sire Giant’s Causeway, Not This Time will also have probable favorite Epicenter in the Kentucky Derby.
Dam: Simply Confection
From the stakes-placed mare Simply Confection, Simplification counts Candy Ride as his broodmare sire. His dam is out of Ballado’s Halo, a full-sister to 2004 Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) winner Ashado. Candy Ride, who is best known for siring champions Gun Runner, Shared Belief, and Game Winner, is also the broodmare sire of Epicenter.
Owner: Tami Bobo
Purchased for $50,000 as a weanling, Simplification will be the first Kentucky Derby starter for Tami Bobo. He will try to become the seventh Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby, the last being Silver Charm (1997).
Trainer: Antonio Sano
Seventh with Gunnevera in 2017, Antonio Sano will make his second Kentucky Derby appearance. He is the winningest trainer in Venezuelan history, and Sano won his first U.S. race in 2010 after relocating to Florida.
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Jose Ortiz has been close from six previous attempts, finishing second on Good Magic (2018) and third on Tacitus (2019), but the Eclipse Award-winning jockey is still seeking his first Kentucky Derby win.
