A weekend warrior made the score of a lifetime on Sunday, September 27, by using TwinSpires.com to bet $64.80 on the jackpot Rainbow^6 at Gulfstream Park and getting back $130,712.80.

“That’s my biggest hit ever, and it’s just now sinking in,” David from Virginia said three days later. “Like a lot of horseplayers, I’ve been playing a long time and been close a lot, but it actually happening is a surreal feeling.”

The Rainbow^6 is unlikely a traditional pick 6 in that the jackpot only pays out to one unique winner, an aspect of the bet David definitely kept in mind when he made his play.

“It’s always in the back of my mind that if I don’t do anything special then I won’t be the lone winner,” he said. “I looked over this sequence and zeroed in on what I thought could be special, and in the fourth leg [race 9] I used a first-time turf horse with solid workouts, and he was rated “B” for turf by [Brisnet.com’s] Sire Stats, and that worked out.”

Silver Sassy paid $74 to win allowance optional claiming event for fillies and mares going one mile on the turf. The three-year-old Silver Tree filly had broken going six furlongs on dirt, but this was her second start off the layoff with a bullet work two back, and her sire had 15% turf winners and an overall average win distance of 7.3 furlongs to suggest his offspring would enjoy stretching out.

“You need a little luck to separate yourself from the crowd, and I got it,” David said.

The lifetime racing fan said work was too crazy right now to fully enjoy the money, but he squirreled some away to use on a trip to Florida this winter to visit his brother and Tampa Bay Downs. David said both his brothers own some horses, and they all got into racing via their dad and uncle.

“I’ve been into racing 45 years, but I never got into owning horses,” David said. “I prefer to play. I work 40-plus horses a week, and this is a hobby for me on weekends. I’m a weekend warrior.”

And last weekend David added some serious firepower to his arsenal for this weekend.
